One of the most helpful new tools in managing concussions is neurocognitive testing. There are several computerized neurocognitive testing programs available and our practice has chosen to use ImPACT. This program tests different functions of the brain affected by concussions or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). All that is required for the testing is a quiet room and a computer with a keyboard and mouse. The entire testing process usually takes less than 30 minutes.
Our physicians are trained in ImPACT testing and results interpretation. The program is used as a tool to help assess athletes with concussions and help guide their treatment; medical judgment ultimately determines whether or not an athlete is ready to return to play. ImPACT is currently being used at the middle school, high school, college and professional levels in a variety of sports.
